This highly interactive workshop will provide updated research on strategies to increase achievement and retention and prepare students for a changing workplace. Participants will learn strategies that have been proven especially effective with students from diverse cultural and language backgrounds; those in poverty; those with perceived developmental or physical challenges; and those on nontraditional career paths, especially women in science, technology, engineering, and math.

Single-Sex Schools and Classrooms in Public Education: Why People Want and Don't Want Them
Recent legislative changes allow more public schools/classes to be single-sex. This presentation concentrates on arguments regarding why these environments are supported/opposed. Such discussions are especially important in science education because science serves as a gateway to many professional opportunities, but males tend to outperform females in science and are more likely to enter science careers. The presentation explores related studies and theories and the presenter's work with single-sex middle school science classrooms.

Using Coalition Partners, Program Providers, and Participants to Sway Legislators
The Wisconsin State Assembly's proposed 2007-09 budget included devastating 62% cuts to displaced homemaker funding. In this interactive presentation, workshop participants will learn how Wisconsin Women Work!, a Women Work! state affiliate, developed and implemented a grassroots campaign to restore funding to these crucial programs. Topics covered will include the variety of ways to contact legislators, finding and working with coalition partners, mobilizing program providers and participants, and sustaining extended advocacy efforts.

The new Perkins Act requires secondary and post-secondary recipients to organize CTE into Programs of Study based on the State Director's Career Clusters Model. This session will provide an overview of the Career Clusters Model and discuss potential areas for equity concerns to arise and to be addressed. Participants will identify strategies and leverage points for ensuring that the development and implementation of clusters, pathways, and programs of study do indeed serve the needs of special population learners.
